Today we’re taking a little journey south to introduce you to a Ruff Rider who is used to push his limits, both in his everyday life and on his Lil’Buddy: Julien Roulet! He is a great sportsman, teacher and also a member of the French Paralympic snowboarding team. In 2018, he even took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyongyang.
Julien is also a great kitesurfer. He’s using his Lil’Buddy every day to drive to school where he teaches and to explore the French Riviera to find the best kite spots.
A profile to discover in our Ruff Riders series, have fun reading!
First, tell us a little about yourself. Where do you come from and what do you do for a living?
I live in Marseilles but I am originally from Corsica. I’m 23 years old and I am teaching at primary school. When it comes to sports I practice kitesurfing, mountain biking and snowboarding. I was lucky enough to participate in the Pyeongchang Paralympic Games in South Korea in 2018.
How did you hear about Ruff Cycles? (e.g. fair, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, friends,…) Do you follow us on our social media channels?
I know Ruff Cycles from Instagram and of course I am following you on all social media channels!
What were important criteria when choosing your bike? What where your steps when choosing your Ruff Cycles bike? What were your reasons for buying the bike? Please tell us in detail how you made your choice.
I was looking for a high quality, well equipped bike with lights and a stylish look. Especially the possibility to ride it in pairs was very important to me. The Lil’Buddy meets all these criteria and is therefore the perfect bike for me!
What do you like about your bike? Have you modified your bike in any way, i.e. have you installed additional accessories (also from other manufacturers)?
What I really admire is the very good braking and the power that makes you forget its weight. Also the fact that we can share moments together. That’s why I only added the footrests for passengers.
Which rides do you do with your bike and how often do you ride it? Do you only use it in good weather or also in rain? Do you ride it only in the city or also on unpaved roads? How long was the longest ride you ever did with your bike?
I use the Lil’Buddy in different conditions, in 50% of the cases there are two of us. I use the bike in good weather, but also in heavy rain and mud. I ride off-road a lot. My longest ride alone is about 50 kilometers with a lot of altitude gain and once there were two of us 38 km along the coast.
What would you advice/tell someone who is considering buying a Ruff Cycles bike?
What are you waiting for? Buy the coolest bike, it will take you far and you often won’t need a car which is good for the environment!

Hi my name is Greg and I live in Cape Town South Africa.
I built a bicycle for Afrikaburn, it was an epic project and learnt that I don’t want to build a frame again.

I wanted to go for a sporty sports car look. The frame being so low and sleek, gave me the idea of creating something similar to a Ferrari or Lamborghini. So I asked myself ... what stands out more than Red?

I was in doubt between a Porucho and a Tango. But because I saw a lot of Porucho's lately so i decided to build me a Tango.

I've been into bikes all my life, and crossed between most styles of riding, but mostly enjoying the creative outlet of custom bikes these days.

Honestly, my inspiration was the early media photos of the Ruff "Shelly" and "Rodder" Deans, I love the simple clean curved lines and wanted to build a tribute.

Here in Denmark is very classic the cargo bikes to cruise around with the kids so I decided to mix this cargo bike with one of your bikes, because I wanted a fat ass bike.
So I decided to mix the Tango lady steel with the Nihola and that was the result.

Quite a lot of the components came from a bicycle online store such as the forks, drum brake, crank/pedals, cables, tyres. I fabricated the tank from 1.5 mm brass sheet, smoothed the welds and polished it to a mirror finish.
